Ive been cooking Thai 5 days a week for 15 years, everything from scratch, have my own Makrut tree, lemongrass, galangal, turmeric, chilli, snake bean, thai and holy basil and sawtooth coriander...just pop out to the garden for whatever I need (my dream of dreams). Ive use so many of your recipes, just cooked Rag na...yum! I must agree about your review on oyster sauce..I was in a rush and just grabbed a bottle of panda from the store....very salty, have gone back to the Maekrua brand..much better flavour, but I have already added Boat lady to my shopping list next time im at the asian supermarket..Going to make your Haw Mook tonight -I found some frozen banana leaves! Love your videos! Thank you!

I recently purchased Dragonfly Premium Flavored Oyster Sauce. This Dragon Fly brand contains:
“Oyster Flavor ((2-Heptanone)”
wish i had read your article first.

Here in New Zealand, I've been using the Megachef since it first appeared in a local Asian store. It really is the best I've found! If it's not available in Vancouver, perhaps you could order it online?

I love your deep dive videos! On a whim, I bought the Healthy Boy Vegetarian Mushroom sauce after watching this video. Ive used it a few times as a oyster sauce sub, but I found I much prefer actual oyster sauce for that. However, my favourite way of using this mushroom sauce is.....with sauteed mushrooms! I use it as my salt whenever I need sauteed mushrooms for something, be it for steak, on burgers, or even on pizza! I simply saute mushrooms with olive oil, butter, freshly ground pepper, and a drizzle of the mushroom sauce. It takes something already delicious (cant go wrong with fried mushrooms!) and makes it just a bit more extra!

After seeing this video, when my previous bottle ran out, I bought a bottle of the Boat Lady to give it a try. A first taste struck me as extremely salty! Sure enough, the Boat Lady label says 830mg Sodium per Tablespoon, almost twice as much as the Maekrua which is 450mg per Tablespoon. Also, at least what I bought here in Indiana, USA, appears to be made in California, not Vietnam.
So I think for now I will go back to the Thai Mama brand. I have not seen Megachef, but I will look for it.

Most assume boat lady is tops but then of course they have never tried the true champ, grab a bottle if you can you will never wish to buy another again.

I believe due to high oyster content. I agree, LKK panda is next best. The Thai one with the pretty label I don't like as much as either LKK. It doesn't have as rich or as much umami flavor. Unfortunately it's hard to find the Boat Lady where I am though panda and the thai one are available. I have ordered boat lady online only to receive panda - as if I didn't know the difference!

I grew up with the iconic Boat Lady oyster sauce ( Los Angeles in the 1960s and 1970s). It was the only one the Chinese groceries in LA's Chinatown carried. My favorite quick meal is a fried egg with dabs of oyster sauce, served over hot steamed rice with a pat of butter in the rice. We also had to have oyster sauce with crispy skinned roast pork, from the Chinese deli.. The Panda brand is also a second choice and it's reasonably priced.

Tastes are subjective so don't make Palin wrong here. If you look up other websites that compare oyster sauce, LKK Boat Lady is consistently ranked #1 while Mekrua isn't even top 3. What you like is what is right for you. The price also reflects the quality of ingredients that go into it.

Being an Indonesian, I was used to using Indonesian brand of oyster sauce. Now, living in France, Megachef is my favourite because it contains no gluten.
